Have you rested?

July 28, 2019 by Johnflurry

It is mid-summer. Have you rested? Have you had enough rest? Do you think it is all up to you? What would happen if you disappeared?

We think we can drive ourselves like oxen fifty weeks a year, resurrect in a two-week vacation, then go back and do it all again. That is madness. -John Eldredge

I hear this often from high achievers when they step away and are honest. “I realized I was not as important as I thought I was.” Ok, here is another scenario. You walk away for a time of rest, and everything falls apart. Nothing was able to move forward. I’d argue that it is not because you are that critical to the project. It is because YOU think you are, so you don’t delegate, share the work, spread the responsibility. I’m not trying to scold here. I am just pointing out how things are supposed to work. God built rest into EVERY day. He built it into EVERY week. He even built it into seasons and calendar. So why is it that we grind away and then when our families fall apart, we don’t get the direction we seek from God and end up burned out, we scratch our heads and wonder how it all went wrong. As Eldredge states, “that is madness.” I heard someone the other day say they never accomplish their to-do lists. I offered some advice: maybe you need a new to-do list.
