Everything and then some

I was off the grid this past week starting around Thursday speaking at an event in the Oregon High Desert. So when I was surprised when learned from Jennifer White that our mutual good friend Mary DeMuth was in need. The last update I saw from Mary was from Haiti where she has been serving. Mary’s youngest daughter was rushed to the hospital with an undiagnosed medical issue on friday.

Mary is one of those people who has greatly changed my life through her writing. Many years ago I dreamed about writing a book about thin places; those physical areas here on earth that thin the veil between heaven and earth. Mary wrote that book and went way beyond what I could have ever done. Tomorrow she releases her new book Everything. The timing of these events is really tough. I am writing this post in hopes that you will pray for Mary but also show her support as she launches her new book. Here are details of how you can help.

You can help in 2 really easy ways:
1. Pray – please pray for her daughter Julia and let her know on her blog.

2. Share the news about her book release tomorrow and throughout the week. You can read up on the book here: http://www.marydemuth.com/everythingthebook/

You will find tweets and retweets happening at @marydemuth and the hashtags #everythingbook

Thanks!

Authors Engaged Online: Phil Vischer

About three months ago my friend Morgan Snyder sent me a copy of Phil Vischer‘s Me, Myself and Bob. It arrived in my mailbox at a time where I was facing many opportunities to charge the field in ministry, business and some personal pursuits like finishing my 1/2 done novel and start a book on connectors.

Morgan has been studying and holding events around the theme of  what a man goes through during his thirties decade. At forty two I have been facinated by his discoveries and how they compare to my own life. Over the last decade he has been interviewing many men in thier later years, asking them what the thirties decade was all about and what they have learned looking back.

One lesson that resonated with me is to not take on too much too early.  Just like a tree, we are meant to mature in a way that both sustains and strengthen, preparing us for greater strength in the future.

In reading Vicher’s book I found myself realizing how much we can make our plans and dreams dominate above everything else in our lives, forsaking the more important things.  The book chronicles his life up to the collapse of Big Idea Productions, his beloved company from which he built the powerful brand of entertainment the world knows as Veggie Tales.

So in the wake of Vischer’s memoir I am taking as Morgan says, the lowest seat at the table in many of my activities. I have the rest of my life to publish, lead and push. I am not saying I won’t do some of that now, but I am going to purposefully pay attention to the deeper things in my life first.

And last, I added Phil to my list of authors that engage on line both here and twitter. It is great to see him responding to fans. He has a lot of people excited about what he has to offer.

Authors Engaged Online Wednesday February 7th: Brian Solis

I don’t remember when I was first came across Brian Solis.  It may have been through a mutual friend since we have many.  I still have not met him personally but I have enjoyed his posts and video interviews.  I had planned to read his book Engage for a long time but my book stack has taken on a  monstrous likeness lately.  This past spring I stumbled on on his interview with Tiffany Shlain where she talked about her new 2011 Sundance Official Selection documentary film Connected.  I enjoyed Brian’s questions in the interview and decided to dig into his work more.  When he launched an early campaign for his new book The End of Business as Usual I decided to order an early copy.  Yesterday I started it.  I was hooked on a book within the first chapter. Honestly I was hooked by just reading Katie Couric’s foreword.  I will post more about the book as I continue.

You can engage with Brian on Twitter at @BrianSolis or what I prefer these days, Google Plus.

Authors Engaged Online Wednesday December 21st: Chris Brogan on Experts

Last week I announce a new way to highlight Authors who engage with their readers. I have had a twitter list of them for a while.  I have become disatisfied with how that list is randomly highlighted via paper.li.  So I ceased those updates altogether.  Instead I wil post daily something one of those authors is saying or posting (I may miss a few days here and there).

Here is the first installment:

Chris brogan is a great writer and thinker. He has continually added value to my business life.  Today he popped up on my radar with a really good post about experts and trying new things called We’re No Experts.  I hope you check it out.

Here is a list of Chris’s books.  I hand out copies of Trust Agents all the time.  If you have not read it, you should. It will revolutionize how you connect with others. Chris’ new book is all about Google Plus.
