About you: Google profiles

I first started using google profile about two years ago. It just makes sense. Google allows you to add as many links as you want as well as a useful description about yourself among other items. It is probably the most public place where you can tell the world about you. Remember the term “google me”. When I originally updated my profile I found that I showed up first on an organic search (raw search of google where you type in a term, like your name). Just for reference there are over a hundred John Bergquists in the U.S. with professions ranging from MDs to computer engineers.

Those seeking new careers or just graduating college have asked me what is the best way to connect with employers or potential business. Simply making sure that your information is readily available is key. An about.me page or a resume site can do the trick. The more creative you can be the better. Honestly, now as google + takes off (I have not seen a social network grow as fast as it has over the last few weeks), it makes sense to have a robust and complete google profile page. It certainly can’t hurt. I am working on a post about my following methods on social networks. A complete profile helps me know if you are someone I need to connect with.

As always I recommend that you never leave your most creative content out on anyone else’s platform. Let all roads lead back to home base as Chris Brogan coined it. Make sure your blog or website is the curation site that holds your remarkableness.

A quick note on privacy. Like any content on the web, be mindful of your rights as well as privacy settings. Too many people are not educating themselves on the details. Make sure you understand what you are sharing and how it can be viewed as well as used in the future.

If you are not on google + I still have invites. Send me a note here with your google account name and I will add you.
If you are on google + you can connect with me there as well.

Absolutely agree John.  I can’t believe that there are people simply abandoning their blogs and pointing their blog domains to Google+ already.  Crazy.

I’m actually starting to get G+ fatigue.  People cancelling Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, etc, etc seems sort of crazy to me.  Not only that, but it feels almost elitist or something.  Lindsay was asking me about it because some teacher friend of hers was quitting Facebook to go to Google+.  Huh?

I wonder if the speed and fervor of which people are joining and praising Google+ could end up having a negative effect.  Its almost like an internet stock in the late 90′s.  Everybody loves it, but its mostly because of its “potential”.

Great insight Jason.  I agree.  It is cool but it is not the tool people are making it out to be yet.  Heck, I just posted this on google + (where you found it) but what others don;t realize is that unlike twitter.  that link is only seen my my circles.  Yes it can be reshared with other peoples circles but that is it.  I like that Twitter allows my link to go out to millions not just refined circles.

I’m all for anything that will reduce social network fatigue. But, is G+ really that? I have been periodically posting out through my Google profile for the last year or so, and more recently replicating tweets there, when that became possible. I’m having a hard time believing my ‘circles’ will grow, since I’m not a full-time social media guy.  Haven’t found my tribe yet, apparently…

Randy,  I have been surprised at how fat things are growing on Google +.  People are even shutting down their FB accounts.  With the integrated tools many of of us use it sure makes since.  I have my contacts email and calendar there so for me it feels natural.  I still favor Twitter and my blog over any though.

Spent time on G+ today, as you already know.  Seems pretty tight.  BTW, I updated http://about.me/randyrhodes with my new marital status and added our Youtube videos from the memorial service.  It’s part of my story now. Maybe that will be an encouragement to those that run across it.

And I have a Gartner blog in the wings. Sigh…

Scobleizer says that +Larry Page just announced that there are more than 10 million Google+ users.

That is amazing isn’t it Randy!?
