Wasn't that a Seinfeld joke?

"How is it that all of the news that happens in the world just exactly fits in the newspaper?"

Great post.

For me it depends on the story topic. How close to home it is, or how much it matters to me. If I have a part in the outcome I like to comment and speak my mind. Generally this is why opinion articles and anything modestly debatable gets much discussion. Post moderation techniques are the best approach, something that our local papers have implemented over the past year. I am one hundred percent behind open commenting, such as Discus or Intense Debate or even using Facebook Connect or Open ID.

Good point Travis. Tools like Askimet are tremendously good at catching spam and trolls. It caught nearly 250 on this blog alone yesterday. I am also with Jon Dale when it comes to moderating legitimate comments. He states a great argument here in his post Why I Don't Moderate Comments and You Shouldn't Either. in addition I actually don't really mind having certain sources not allow commenting. The BBC allows comments to some degree but I don't usually feel compelled to comment there.

I'm not too distracted by Trolls. They're pretty easy to spot (and marginalize).

I'd rather scan over a plethora of interesting commentary, periodically jumping over crap, than not see many or any comments.

Just one insurance guys perspective :)

I agree. Commenting products like Intense Debate are used globally and allow for logging in once and forgetting it at a variety of sites. I love it. It doesn't allow for total anonymity, but does allow the freedom of movement between news sites, blogs and more. On the other hand, commenting can be seen as a big distraction to many readers (we've all met the trolls), and the level of moderation required even for a small newspaper is much more than most people would realize.

Jillian, I think two way distribution is very important. One thing papers could do to encourage this is to allow easy commenting. I have found leaving commenting on news sites to be very frustrating. Most require you to sign up for an account before a comment can be left. I find it frustrating how resistant traditional news sources are to using social media passport tools like global accounts and the like. In my opinion it would benefit them to make it as easy as possible to encourage interaction on their sites.

I'm wondering what you think of trying to turn news around. Instead of having it a one way distribution, make it an extended "Letters to the Editor" and encourage public discussion of community matters. I think it could be more effective in a small community like Corvallis.

I'm with you John. The media promoted news is generally crap, has no need to be known outside a local community, or even the subjects home! In today's world, we couldn't hide from current events if we tried. I don't have TV, don't get the paper, and lately, don't visit USA Today or CNN or MSNBC that much. And yet I'm still aware of far more than what matters to my life. Not only is most of the news irrelevant and depressing, but it's just a time waster to pay attention to. Thanks for bringing it to my attention though...and confirming truth.
