Why Ning, Why Now

A few weeks ago my friend @loyan asked me to post on why I promote the Ning community tool.  I have been using Ning.com for a couple of years now as a community proponent and connector to help individuals, organizations and companies gather their tribe and give them the tools to build networks.

facesOver the years we have all seen situations that call for communication and connectivity within a group.  Whether you went to a conference or needed information on a special interest, you probably have had the opportunity to join a web forum.  These sites worked great for simple idea sharing, but they were very limited in scope and usability.  It was difficult to post a video, and your information page was limited to a few links to your webpage and text.  Also, on forums there is a tendency for individuals to hide behind avatars and screen names, taking away from transparency and authentic community participation.

So why do I use Ning? Here are a few of the reasons:

Great tools for admins and members:ning

Along came the Ning platform.  With Ning a site administrator/leader can easily give their tribe all the tools that they need to build a thriving community.  Ning has integrated video, WUSIWYG (what you see is what you get), chat rooms, extensive profile page customization and tools, as well as ways for groups to form within the site.

Promoting new sites:

When you create a community site, Ning keeps a badge at the bottom showing the site creator’s picture, and a link encourages others to create their own communities.  There have been cases where clients have asked if we should remove the link.  My answer is no.  Keep that control in the hands of those in the community.  Building your own simple site is simple and fast.  If you need to take it to a higher level you can come to us.

Website integration:

Ning has built their platform in a way that allows communities to build their site with the built in features using the Ning provided skins.  Users can go a few steps further by tweaking the css code, paying premium services to remove ads, and linking to a designated domain. Ning has also allowed advanced editing and programming access to firms like us.  We are able to take a client’s Ning site and fully integrate it into their current website.

Ning just keeps getting better every day with new features.  Just this week they released an app that allows for event registration within a community site. Check Ning out for yourself and give your tribe a place to connect, share, and grow.

I am curious about your reasons for using Ning.  Please feel free to add them as comments.

I’m interested in building a social group into my existing website and have been researching what to use. I heard that you would have to join NING before joining a ning site that was on my site. Is that true?

Hey Kenn, I remember connecting on LuckyStartups.com. Thanks for reading. If you create a Ning community withing your site the members will basically be joining your community. Yes they will have a universal ning account that can be used on other ning sites if they wish but it is not a two step process. Let me know if we can help. I love the dog site and your videos rock.

Thanks John! Lucky was fun and the first time I was on a web video.

Good to hear about Ning. Someone also recommended SocialGO. I have to check that out. So far, Ning sounds great.

I think my biggest issue is that I have a great group of 9000 people on a Facebook Fan Page: http://www.facebook.com/dogfiles but facebook can be scary. You never when they’ll just change something and those people are gone. I think a social network on my site for the biggest fans would solve that. Kind of a safety net from facebook.

Kenn, 9,000 fans is a great number. As with any user driven tool, we have seen the 80/20 rule applies. Communities that have at least 1000 members seem to really self sustain with the 20% generating the buzz and the rest participating. I have seen Ning work really well for active small groups as well though. And Yes, facebook’s changes can be a bit unnerving. Ning is a stable platform and should suit your needs really well.
      Thanks,
      John

Checking out the new event registration feature right now! Thanks for the heads up. I’ve been administrating a Ning based site at http://www.willametteinnovators.com so every bit of advice is gold right now.

You are one of my favorite innovators my friend!

5 Reasons why I like (and therefore use) Ning:

    1. The free version is great – Every community feature is available for free. The premium accounts are affordable if needed.

    2. Community focused – Ning stands out to me as a community driven platform. Say opposed to Facebook fan pages. By default members can add blogs, share photos, video or even create groups…

    3. Groups feature – I love the group feature! Specific member driven groups help create more personal relevance for each member.

    4. So easy – You don’t need to be a web developer to create your own community within 5 minutes (no kidding). And if you do have web kung-fu it is flexible enough to creatively customize the design and features.

    5. Admin and community moderation – Ning does a great job at delivering fine permission settings and enabling moderation to admins and moderators.
